Environment
I am strongly dedicated to minimizing the environmental footprint of my printing and utilize recycled materials, locally-sourced or sustainable products, and continue to reduce the carbon impact of my materials and printing.
The world of printing is quite dynamic now, with new products becoming available and many existing ones disappearing. As I continue to learn of products and techniques that minimize the environmental footprint of my printing, I will share what I’ve learned here and on The Paper Chase so that others can also benefit.
Discounts for Environmental Organizations and Causes

100% carbon-neutral Electricity
As of May 2022, Nickelson Editions is proudly generating 100% of the electricity used each year via solar power. It has taken about five years of upgrades to our home, but with the addition of extra solar arrays on our garage we now generate enough solar throughout the year to satisfy all of our electrical needs, including all heating and cooling via heat pumps (not a trivial aspect of living in Maine winters) as well as our first fully electric car. (For solar geeks, our arrays are tied to the grid, so we do not have a pure 24/7, all-renewable set-up, but we generate extra solar in the summer and use our credit with the local utility via Maine’s net metering to use power as needed from the grid on days in the winter when we cannot generate enough solar)
Recycling & Paper Usage
The best way to minimize the use of resources is to not use them in the first place. Obviously I am in the business of making prints, but I endeavor to be as efficient as possible, using scraps for proof printing and using technical skill and color management to minimize the number of proof prints needed. Anything that cannot be used is recycled if at all possible. For shipping and packaging materials, I try to re-use materials as much as possible — so if you’d like me to take cardboard tubes or boxes off your hands, let me know!
